Promote Your Own Personal Business

Ever since I was in college, being my own boss was something I’ve always wanted to be. A computer wizard in my own right, I envisioned myself running my own business dealing with computers and the internet. I had programming skills. I could code webpages. I could easily assemble computers, as well as handle computer repairs. I could be a consultant. I could be a technical support specialist. I could be a webmaster. With these skills backing me up, I was confident I’d be able to make it.

But as dreams come, I realized that being a “computer wizard” isn’t that unique nowadays, and that there are thousands of people just like me. “Computer wizards” are a dime a dozen, after all. Plus, I had one major problem: I didn’t know much on promoting a business.

We all know of people enrolling for business schools. I was one of those who didn’t think much of going to school, confident that my computer skills would be enough to get my business going. I was dead wrong.

We all know about the value of connections. I did have a few, and I utilized those. After all, good PR is always good for business. But as time went by, those connections became saturated. Exhausted. The income I garnered from those connections just didn’t seem to make ends meet.

I read about and applied strategies shared by others. I maintained a good website. Excellent keyword optimization practices implemented, my site got a decent amount of web traffic, but that just didn’t equate to having new clients.

Eventually, I realized what my problem was: my understanding on marketing my business: When it comes to promoting or marketing an affiliate business, one needs to first understand the nature of one’s business, in conjunction with were the business stands.

My problem was I was playing the Major Leagues, when I was actual still in the Little League playpen. I was thinking of infiltrating a national scale, when in fact, I haven’t even begun working in my own neighbourhood.

With this, I decided to go small. I went around and marketed myself as a “local”. It wasn’t as easy as I had thought, but it got things going. I posted flyers, attended conventions, made friends with computer sales personnel, and even went to schools and offered my services as a computer specialist.

Six months after, clients started coming in. Not as “national” as I had dreamed, but they were clients. I then realized that all I had to do was go small and establish my name from there. I was just aiming too high. Now, things are going much more steady, which is strong enough to be my foundation in my efforts in going big.

Learn Which Social Networking Sites To Use For Promoting Your Websites

Social networking has become quite popular with Facebook and Myspace leading the charge. Hundreds of other sites have cropped up as well, which makes it difficult to know which sites to spend your valuable time on, especially if you’re using the site to market your products and services.

Most of these sites are beneficial when you?re trying to find old friends and associates, but are difficult to crack for business purposes. Facebook is largely private, which means that the content you add there does not show up in any search engines. Myspace is good if your target audience largely consists of young adults, but it’s generally not considered a professional or serious website. LinkedIn is useful to find old work associates, but it is also largely private and doesn?t help much when trying to promote your websites, products, and services to your entire target audience.

In each case, you can find people that you already know, but how do you market to the masses using social or professional networking services while not breaking your budget?

The answer is ProSpotlight. This is a new community network that caters to entrepreneurs, business people, retailers, brokers and agents, service providers, and self-starting, career building professionals. With a free account, a professional has the ability to create a 5 page website, blog, profile, and contact form. The service provider is listed in a local directory specific to their location and occupation. In each of these cases, they are allowed to create dofollow links to their own websites. A dofollow link is one where the rel=nofollow html attribute has not been added. This makes it possible for search engines to follow the link, which helps boost search engine rankings.

The directory is sorted by the number of points a retailer has earned. Points are earned by doing things on the site such as adding content to their prosite and problog, by commenting on other people?s blog posts, by creating and joining groups, and many other activities. The more effort is put into the creation of the content, the more points will be earned. Another great way to earn points is by referring people to their webpages on the site. When their webpage is the first one viewed, and then the visitor registers, the referring person receives bonus points based on the amount of points the other person earns.

By writing good quality content without excessive outbound links, a page will be viewed as a valuable addition to the web community and the service provider will be rewarded by Yahoo and the other search engines in addition to direct traffic.

Search engine marketing via social networks can be rewarding if you use the right websites. ProSPOTLIGHT has been designed from the ground up with your marketing needs in mind.

What Newbies Need To Know About Using Pay Per Click Ads To Generate Traffic

You can have the best looking web site in the world promoting a fantastic product, but if your potential customers don’t know about it, you won’t get any traffic or sales. This is the single biggest problem facing all internet marketers. This is especially so for newbies who frequently get discouraged and give up their attempts to make money online.

What Is Pay per Click

This is one of the more expensive methods of generating traffic, but provides an instant stream of visitors to your site. There are a number of companies offering pay per click advertising, such as Google, Yahoo and Overture, to name but a few. The most well known is the Google Adwords program, which I will use to illustrate the principles of pay per click.

You may have noticed the ads displayed on the right hand side of Google’s search page results. Each ad is associated with a ?keyword phrase? (e.g ladies golf clubs) and is displayed next to the search results when someone searches for those keywords.

These ads are known as contextual ads because they are displayed on pages where the content is closely related to the keywords associated with the ad.

You will also come across these ads when you visit certain websites. The same principle applies and the theme / topic of the page matches the keywords associated with the ad. In this instance, the webmaster will receive a payment from Google for displaying their ads. This program is known as Adsense.

How Does Pay Per Click work

Place your ads with Google Adwords and pay for every click that takes a visitor to your site.
The price per click is determined by the popularity of the keyword and its position in the list. Prices generally vary between a few cents and $5 but can be very much more for some keywords.

There is no fixed price for a specific keyword or the position where it’s displayed on the page. The advertiser specifies the maximum amount they are prepared to pay and then Google uses this and other information from all the other advertisers to work out the position of each ad. Exactly how this is done is outside the scope of this article and many books have been written on the subject.

You can open a free ?Adwords? account with Google Adwords. They have very good online help screens and examples to help you set up your campaigns.

If this method appeals to you, you can at a later stage spend a lot more time specializing in the numerous strategies that have been devised to make this technique successful. In common with all advertising, the secret is to continually test and improve on the performance of your ads. The bottom line is quite simply, if you make more profit than the cost of your ads, you are on a winner. If not, stop immediately and try something else!

A good idea is to get some help in the form of step by step instructions and coaching videos designed specifically for newbies.

Why You Should Avoid Google’s Content Network

When you create an AdWords campaign you have a choice as to whether you want your ads to appear on Google?s network of content sites. These are sites that have signed up for Google?s Adsense program, which allows them to display AdWords ads on their pages. Generally speaking, this is not very targeted traffic. Google tries to display your ad on pages with relevant content, and it does a pretty good job of it. Nonetheless, I personally do not like this traffic, and I will tell you why.

When marketing on the Internet, the sooner your ad is displayed to your prospect, the greater your chance of making a sale. This is the reason why search engine traffic performs so well. Most surfers initiate their Internet activity at a search engine. Indeed, many have a search engine like Google, Yahoo, or MSN set as their home page. In other words, it is the first thing they see when they log onto the Internet.

Lets take a closer look at the chain of events. A surfer logs onto the Internet because she wants to find something. She goes to Google and enters her search and among the results she sees your ad. It catches her attention and she clicks through to your site. Since you are offering exactly what she is looking for, she is turned into a customer and you make a sale. This scenario happened the way it did because we understand the virtues of targeted traffic, but it also happened because we were the first to satisfy the surfer?s needs.

Now, say the surfer has been online for some time and has been surfing from one site to another, looking around and possibly doing research. This surfer may be frustrated because she has not found what she wants, and is therefore in a negative mindset. What is more likely, however, is that this surfer has turned into a window shopper. Either way, since this surfer has been online for some time now, the result is she will be harder to convert into a sale.

When your site is shown on content sites it is being displayed to surfers who have often been online for a longer period of time and are generally not as receptive to your message. Add to this the fact that your ad will not be as targeted and your chances of converting the surfer are even less.

What we want is highly targeted traffic and we want that traffic to be receptive to our message. As that traffic becomes more and more diluted, its value diminishes as well.

One strategy that can be used with content targeting is to create a separate campaign for it. In this campaign all bids would be as low as possible, i.e. 5 cents. In this way you can display your ad on content sites, but the cost would be more in line with the traffic?s value. Keep in mind also that there is greater chance of click fraud when advertising on content sites, which is another good reason to keep bids as low as possible.

Google recently added a feature where you can bid separately on your content network ads, which allows you to bid lower on your content network ads without having to setup another campaign. This is useful and can be a good solution. I still prefer to create a separate campaign for content network advertising, however. A separate campaign allows for greater organization and analysis. This choice is one of personal preference, though, and you should use whichever option you feel more comfortable with.

In the end, you should be skeptical about content targeting, as the traffic quality will not be the same as the pure search engine traffic. If you really want the extra traffic, then make sure you bid separately for your content site campaign, keeping your bids as low as possible. You should also keep a close eye on your stats to make sure you are not paying for any fraudulent clicks. Good luck.
